Instrumentation: Catalysts in Wastewater Treatment

In today's world, with all the growth and development happening in industry and population, we're seeing more and more wastewater. That's why wastewater treatment has become such a big deal for protecting our environment. instrumentation is like the "senses" and "brain" of the wastewater treatment system, making sure that the treatment process is efficient, stable, and up to standard.

Flow measurement instrumentation is the basic monitoring equipment in wastewater treatment. Electromagnetic flow meters are based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, and they're incredibly precise tools that can measure the flow of wastewater with great accuracy. In a large urban wastewater treatment plant that handles hundreds of thousands of tons of sewage per day, operators install an electromagnetic flowmeter in the water intake pipe.

This allows the plant to monitor the inflow of sewage in real time. This real-time monitoring is essential for the subsequent treatment of the pharmaceutical dosage and adjustment of the equipment operation parameters. This provides the plant with the basic data it needs to ensure the efficient and effective treatment of wastewater. This innovative approach allows for precise chemical agent addition, ensuring optimal treatment while eliminating chemical wastage.

The SITRANS FMS 500 electromagnetic flowmeter sensor is connected to the SITRANS FMT 020 transmitter to form the SITRANS FM 520 electromagnetic flowmeter system, which can be used for flow measurement in wastewater treatment. With a measuring range of 0 to 10m/s, pipe diameters from DN 15 to DN 1200, and an accuracy of up to 0.4% of the standard rate, with an optional rate of 0.2%, it can accurately measure the flow of wastewater to provide basic data for the dosage of chemicals and adjustment of the operating parameters of the equipment in the treatment process.

An ultrasonic flowmeter, by virtue of its non - contact measurement advantages, allows us to install it outside the channel to measure wastewater flow. It is especially suitable for wastewater with impurities and high corrosiveness. Take a chemical industry park's industrial wastewater discharge channel for example. Since the wastewater contains a large number of chemical impurities, ordinary flowmeters are prone to damage. However, the ultrasonic flowmeter runs stably and enables us to accurately measure the wastewater flow. This helps the park effectively manage and control wastewater discharge.

It's so important to have instrumentation that can measure liquid levels. They help make sure that wastewater treatment facilities can operate smoothly and safely. Hydrostatic level meters are our friends. They're the ones that figure out the height of the liquid by measuring the pressure of the liquid. This helps us keep an eye on the height of the liquid in primary sedimentation tanks, regulating tanks, and other water storage facilities. It makes sure that the liquid doesn't overflow or get pumped out, and it helps us keep the treatment process running smoothly.

For example, in a food processing plant's wastewater treatment station, the hydrostatic level meter of the regulating tank malfunctioned. It didn't monitor the liquid level in time, causing the regulating tank to overflow. This overflow not only polluted the surrounding environment but also disrupted the subsequent treatment process because the fluctuating water volume made normal operation impossible. This incident highlights the importance of the liquid level measurement instrumentation.

SITRANS LR200 radar level meter adopts advanced radar measurement technology, non-contact measurement of wastewater treatment in a variety of storage containers, reaction pools, such as the height of the liquid level, not affected by the chemical nature of the wastewater, temperature, pressure, and other factors, high precision measurement, strong stability, real-time feedback of the liquid level information, to prevent the liquid from overflowing or pumping, to ensure that the treatment process is smooth!

Ultrasonic level meter measures liquid level by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves, which is not affected by the nature of wastewater, and is widely used in all kinds of wastewater containers, such as large sewage storage tanks. In a landfill leachate treatment station, due to the complexity and corrosiveness of the leachate, the ultrasonic level meter steadily monitors the level of the storage tank to ensure that the level is always in the controllable range, which provides reliable data support for the leachate treatment.

Water quality monitoring instrumentation is the core “gatekeeper” of wastewater treatment. pH meter is used to measure the acidity and alkalinity of wastewater. In the acid and alkaline neutralization treatment link, accurate pH monitoring ensures that the wastewater acidity and alkalinity are up to the standard, and creates the appropriate conditions for subsequent biological treatment. The wastewater of an electroplating plant is highly acidic, and before entering the biological treatment tank, it is monitored in real time by a pH meter, and the dosing system is used to accurately add alkaline agents to neutralize the wastewater. If the pH value is too high or too low, it will inhibit or even kill the microorganisms, making the biological treatment ineffective.

Engineers can use SITRANS P320 pressure transmitter to measure the pressure change of pipeline, filter and other parts of the wastewater treatment system. This measurement indirectly reflects the operation status of the equipment and pipeline clogging, etc. It helps us find and solve potential problems in time, and guarantees the normal operation of the treatment system.

The dissolved oxygen meter is indispensable in the biological treatment stage. Microbes consume oxygen when decomposing organic matter in wastewater. The dissolved oxygen meter monitors the dissolved oxygen content in the aeration pool in real - time. Staff adjust the aeration amount accordingly to ensure that microbes have sufficient oxygen for metabolism and maintain high - efficiency degradation of organic matter. In a paper mill's wastewater treatment plant, the staff, through monitoring with the dissolved oxygen meter, stably control the dissolved oxygen content of the aeration basin within an appropriate range. This significantly improves the removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater and achieves good treatment results.

The sludge concentration meter is an essential tool for effective sludge treatment. In the sludge thickening tank, it plays a crucial role. It closely monitors the sludge concentration and provides precise timing information for sludge dewatering operations. Dewatering the sludge in a timely manner before it reaches the optimal concentration level is key to ensuring cost - effectiveness and achieving optimal dewatering results. On the other hand, over - concentrating the sludge can potentially cause sludge deterioration. At the wastewater treatment station of a printing and dyeing factory, operators use the sludge concentration meter to accurately determine the timing of sludge dewatering. This not only improves the dewatering efficiency but also reduces the cost of sludge treatment.

SITRANS WF330 Solid Flow Meter: It is suitable for measuring materials that can be accumulated on the sensing plate. In the sludge incineration process, we can install it at the incinerator's inlet. We use it in conjunction with the Milltronics SF500 integrator to accurately monitor the flow rate of sludge entering the incinerator. Additionally, we can seamlessly connect the SITRANS RD500 Remote Data Monitor to the integrator to achieve remote data transmission and monitoring. The SITRANS RD500 Remote Data Monitor seamlessly connects to the integrator for remote data transmission and monitoring.

Instrumentation is used throughout the various processes of wastewater treatment, from influent monitoring, treatment process control to effluent compliance testing, each link is inseparable from their accurate measurement and feedback. With the continuous progress of science and technology, the measurement accuracy, stability and intelligence of instrumentation will continue to improve, bringing more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for the wastewater treatment industry, helping us to guard water resources and create a cleaner and better environment.
